Equal parts Dexter and 50 Shades, this is the eagerly awaited new novel from A. R. Torre, author of the award winning erotic thriller, The Girl in 6E.
The rules are the same. I can’t open the door. I can’t leave. I can’t kill anyone.
The only difference is, I don’t set the rules anymore. Guards in grey uniforms do. It is everything I never wanted and everything I always deserved. I write to you now, from a prison cell. My home for the next twenty to thirty years.
That’s the going term for murder.
If you haven’t read ANY of the Deanna Madden Series – be warned, this is the 3rd book in the series – therefore there MAY BE SPOILERS***
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of If You Dare from the author in exchange for an honest review – I have been BEGGING for it since I finished Do Not Disturb. If You Dare picks up months later – Deanna still suffering both highs and lows in her attempts to keep herself tightly coiled (or maybe not?) Because as the synopsis says – she’s writing to you from prison. If you’re a fan of the series, you’re probably going through the throngs of emotions I did when reading that blurb – WTF? NO! What about Jeremy?! Because Do Not Disturb gave us a shred of hope that Deanna could overcome her ….. herself really and allow Jeremy in a little bit more – maybe even be able to have a life outside of 6E?
But as the story progresses so does Deanna – and then regresses. She’s still very much haunted by the demons of her past – the loss of her family, the truth she’s holding from Jeremy, even though she shows more of her self more and more as they get closer. She’s just too scared to let him in 100%. Because then he would know. She’d no longer be the object of his affection or look at her the way she needs. Because she knows deep down all he would see is a monster.
Deanna has fought monsters throughout this series – but this time? She might just have to face the scariest one yet…. herself.
“I am the madness, the demon, the insanity.”
I read this book in one sitting – chain smoking, furiously hitting my kindle to turn the page because this was a maze of entertainment. So much is going on and though it’s mainly through Deanna’s POV, it switches it up here and there to give us a peek into what’s going on behind the scenes, leaving us little bread crumbs if you will to slowly bring us to the epic conclusion of this book. One that left my mouth hanging open.
After I read the second book in this series, I thought Alessandra Torre really wrapped it up beautifully and though I was excited for a third book? I was also leery because I didn’t think the series needed – Fuck, was I wrong.
I didn’t think I had anymore questions – I didn’t think there were anymore answers. I was proven wrong on so many levels.
Deanna has carved out a life for herself – one that is sort of working, but now that she’s had that taste of freedom? She wants it – craves it – and fears it. She knows there are limitations to what she should be allowing herself, and as she craves more and more, things start to whirl out of control….. out of her control. This story isn’t quite like the others. It’s so much more…. the pain, the fear, the need – it’s all there, flawlessly illustrated in the only way Alessandra Torre can; creating monsters you want to see have their happily ever after. And that says a lot about her stories – her talent and these amazing characters she brings us.
All the old players are back – and a few more that will leave you furiously reading to find out what happens next.
A book like this doesn’t come around very often – it takes balls to write a woman like Deanna with such strength and determination that will leave the readers not only loving her for who she is – but because of it as well.
